7 Reasons You Should Exercise Outdoors

Table of Contents

Have you lost motivation to exercise? Changing workout environments can help you get back on track. And there’s no better place to exercise than outdoors. You can do it in your backyard, the park, track field or even in the forest.

You probably know that running outside is better than running on a treadmill. Well, you can benefit from doing strength training outdoors. All you need is a floor mat (optional) and proper technique for different bodyweight exercises.

Here are 7 reasons you should exercise outdoors.

1. You will perform better

I’m always able to perform more reps and do more challenging exercises when I train outdoors. And I’ve found this to be true for others, too. You’re also more likely to do more exercises and your workouts will last longer.

2. You’ll get vitamin D

Exercising outside on a sunny day will give you vitamin D. Getting this nutrient is vital for your health—it’s been proven to improve bone health, prevent cancer, improve mental health and much more.

Research shows that most Americans don’t get enough vitamin D because they spend too much time indoors, so use exercise to kill two birds with one stone.

3. You will save money

You won’t have to pay for a gym membership or buy home workout equipment. Frankly, weights are overrated – you can get great results with bodyweight exercises. Here arecardio bodyweight exercises for your next outdoors workout.

4. Your mood will improve

Exercising in a small or stuffy room can sometimes ruin your mood. But outdoor workouts are the complete opposite – the fresh air, sunlight and scenery will make you feel better.

Research actually shows that working out outside can boost mental health. It’s a great way to reduces stress, anxiety and depression.

5. Find new workout buddies

This is a great advantage for people who train at home. You’ll find people to train with and others will motivate you to push yourself.

Personally, I’ve made a few friends exercising outside. Feel free to start conversations with people doing the same exercises as you.

6. You’re more likely to stay consistent

A Canadian study found that women who exercised outdoors were more likely to stick to their routine than those who exercised indoors. This was attributed to the fact that outdoor workouts are more enjoyable.

7. You’ll burn more calories

Better workout performance and longer workouts will help you burn more calories. Outdoor workouts can also give you the freedom to perform fat-burning exercises like hill sprints.
