DISCOGRAPHY

The Basics:

A diagnostic test that can determine which disc is causing your pain

It is often used to guide our treatment of abnormal discs

Also known as a discogram, discography is a diagnostic procedure that our pain management doctors use to confirm which disc is causing the pain. It’s commonly recommended for patients who have persistent lower back, groin, hip, and leg pain with multiple possible lumbar sources of pain that have not responded to other approaches.
During this pain management procedure, our doctor will inject a contrast dye into specific discs and outline any damaged areas on an X-ray and determine which discs are causing your symptoms.

A discogram (discography) is a diagnostic test in which contrast dye is injected into one or more spinal discs to identify whether a specific disc is the source of your back or neck pain. It is usually used when other imaging hasn't pinpointed the cause.
It helps determine whether a damaged or degenerated disc is responsible for your pain by reproducing your typical symptoms during the test and showing disc structure on imaging, which guides treatment decisions.
The skin is numbed first. Because the test gently pressurizes the disc, you may briefly feel your familiar pain — this is expected and helps identify the problem disc. Discomfort is temporary.
It typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on how many discs are tested, and is performed using X-ray (fluoroscopic) guidance on an outpatient basis.
You may have soreness at the injection site for a day or two. Arrange for someone to drive you home and follow your care team's aftercare instructions; results are reviewed with you to plan next steps.
