Radiofrequency neurotomy (radiofrequency ablation) uses heat generated by radio waves to interrupt specific nerves that carry pain signals from the spine, reducing chronic neck or back pain.
It is often used for facet joint–related pain that has responded to diagnostic nerve blocks, and for certain chronic neck and back pain. Candidacy is based on prior block response and your physician's evaluation.
The area is numbed with local anesthetic and the procedure is done with image guidance, so you may feel pressure. Some soreness afterward is normal and usually temporary.
Relief varies, but because treated nerves take time to regenerate, many patients experience pain reduction for several months to a year or more, and the procedure can be repeated if pain returns.
Most patients return to normal activities within a few days, with mild soreness at the site at first. Your care team will provide specific aftercare guidance.
