An SI joint injection delivers anti-inflammatory medication and a local anesthetic into the sacroiliac joint, where the spine meets the pelvis, to relieve pain and help confirm the joint as the pain source.
It is used for lower back, buttock, or hip pain caused by sacroiliac joint dysfunction or inflammation. Your physician determines candidacy based on your symptoms and exam.
The skin is numbed first and image guidance is used, so most patients feel only mild pressure. Temporary soreness afterward is common.
The injection usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis.
Results vary; some patients experience relief for weeks to months, and the injection may be repeated as advised. It can also help guide further treatment.
