When your pain has gotten bad enough that it’s time get help, choosing the right spine specialist is crucial. But what are the ways to know you’ve found the right one? Research is an important part of making the choice. We’ve put together some key points to look for when you’re finding the right spine specialist for you.

Is your spine specialist a trained, experienced, board-certified surgeon?

Choosing a highly trained, board-certified surgeon with significant experience when it comes to managing your pain and resolving the cause is paramount. Board-certification in their chosen field means your specialist has trained, practiced and succeeded in their area of expertise, and has passed rigorous testing in their knowledge and expertise with spinal procedures.

Choose a trained spinal surgeon with experience, who understands everything about the spine to help you alleviate your pain.

Is your doctor’s practice devoted to spinal surgery?

Some practices offer a variety of procedures and specialties. A practice completely devoted to spinal surgery and spine treatements is likely going to be more qualified and experienced with newer procedures and technologies in the field. To qualify for the North American Spine Society, at least 50% a physician's practice must be devoted to spine treatment. This gives a good idea about why it’s best to look for a practice that is devoted to spine treatment and surgery exclusively.

Does your spine specialist provide education and assistance with the decision-making process of whether surgery is right for you?

Once you have located a specialist you think might be right for you, have an initial consultation to see what you think. You should feel comfortable with your surgeon, and able to ask all manner of questions. Your surgeon should be able to educate you and help you weigh the pros and cons of your treatment options. Beware of a doctor who is pushing a surgical procedure as a first step without trying other methods to help you manage your pain. Your doctor should thoroughly discuss any risks, benefits and other details about your options and help you decide which is best for you.
